What good would it be to invest your money and time in purchasing and setting up a home theater surround sound audio system with your high definition television or home theater projector and NOT be able to experience a wide selection of quality HD TV programs, sports, and movies?
To have access to a wide variety of HDTV programming, live sporting events, and movies for your home theater, you need to subscribe to a high def package from digital satellite TV providers DISH Network or DIRECTV, or your
local digital cable TV service provider. They'll typically lease you the required HDTV receiver.

If your home theater system HAS HDMI inputs with
audio and video switching, you will just need to connect your HDTV receiver (along with each of your other A/V source
components such as a Blu-ray Disc player or PlayStation 3) with an HDMI cable
to one of the HDMI inputs on the back of the home theater receiver. You will also
need to run an HDMI cable out of your home theater receiver to an HDMI input on your HD TV or projector.
If your home theater system has HDMI inputs with video switching only,
you'll need to connect your HDTV receiver and each of your other source components to the back of the home theater receiver with
BOTH an HDMI cable AND a separate digital audio cable for the sound. |
If your home
theater system LACKS HDMI inputs and A/V switching
(perhaps it's got just an HDMI video output) but has
multiple digital audio inputs, you will want use a
digital audio cable to connect your HDTV receiver and other
source components to the home theater system, and also run a
separate video cable from each of your sources to your TV.
If you are just
connecting an HDTV antenna directly to your television for free
over-the-air local broadcasts, you will need to run a digital
audio cable from the television to a digital audio input on your
home theater system.
