Single Speaker Virtual Surround Soundbar

IF you have the required room space (and bass tolerant family members and neighbors) to set up a separate subwoofer along with a sound bar speaker, you should definitely consider going with a two-piece soundbar and subwoofer package so you'll be able to experience much deeper low frequency bass effects.

IF you're in the market for a stand to hold your flat panel television and several A/V components, consider a TV / component stand with integrated virtual surround system.

Achieving the most realistic virtual surround sound effects from just one speaker depends on much of the sound being reflected off the side and back walls of your room to simulate a 5.1 channel home theater system without the presence of actual front left, front right, left surround, right surround, and subwoofer speakers.

Pictured in the carousel above are picks for the top single speaker virtual surround sound solutions currently available -- all priced under $1000, expect for the Yamaha Digital Sound Projectors.

The $2000 Yamaha YSP-5100BL and $1700 Yamaha YSP-4100BL combine Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio decoding and seven channel output, plus a SWK-W10 for wirelessly connecting an optional powered sub. The YSP-5100 packs 40 tiny, individually driven "Beam drivers" measuring just 1½ inches in diameter and two 4½ inch woofers into a single cabinet measuring just under 4 feet long and only 3½ inches deep.

Instead of purchasing and setting up a surround sound system with a home theater receiver, a bunch of speakers, and lots of cables and wiring, a self-amplified Yamaha Digital Sound Projector (with 4 HDMI inputs and analog to 1080p upscaling via HDMI output) precisely focuses the sound from each of the 40 Beam drivers towards the walls and controls the speaker delay times to deliver multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners the same way that sound from separate front, center and rear speakers does.

Yamaha even includes a YIT-W10 for wirelessly connecting your iPod or iPhone.
